Interesting facts about Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Atlantic City is one of the best places to go in New Jersey for visitors and conventions. It is a fun destination featuring world-famous casinos and hotels, upscale restaurants, unique attractions, golf courses, relaxing spas, outlet shopping and much more. The city has a long and varied history. Although a lot has been written about the post 1977 casino years, and the heyday years of the 30's & 40's when the Boardwalk was the in place to be seen.  Atlantic City’s history dates back over 200 years before the first dice were thrown or the first jitney hit the streets. The first inhabitants were the Lenni-Lenape Indians. They travel led over the Old Indian Trail from the Mainland to the Absecon island, where Atlantic City rests, to spend the summer. The Indians would take advantage of what the ocean and bay had to offer, along with the varieties of fish, wildlife and flora of the island. For the next few centuries, the Absecon Island was not only visited by Lenni-Lenape Indians, but also hunters and some of the early mainland settlers such as Jeremiah Leeds. By 1850, there were 7 permanent dwellings built on the island, all of these were owned by descendants of Jeremiah Leeds. From 1852 began construction of the railroad to Camden and on July 5th 1854 the first train from Camden had arrived. In the same year was built and the light house. Atlantic City was becoming a fast growing seaport.
